MVLA 06 Roma Blue (premier) is looking for a full-time goalkeeper.

This team has a majority of players from last year's 05/06 MVLA United Blue team that went to Surf Cup and also finished 5th at top level of State Cup in their first time out last fall (losing to champs Galaxy), and are currently sitting atop league standings with a finals appearance at Davis. This season, they are still coming together as a team under the same excellent coach, with the philosophy very much focused on possession and individual skill development.

If interested, please contact the team manager listed on the tryouts page: http://www.mvlasoccer.org/tryouts/.

    Thanks

Please tell me I am missing something. An 06 team looking for a FULL TIME goal-keeper? Please tell me that you really mean an 06 player who is interested in playing GK and that that player will rotate with one or two other players who are also interested in playing GK (maybe playing full games occasionally).

    That's what I was thinking...these are 9 and 10 year olds.

Let me clarify - every younger goalkeeper I have seen at MVLA also plays in the field, sometimes for another team in the same age group at the club, depending on the appropriate skill level for the player. So yes, they would do both, play in the field to develop their soccer skills, but have an interest in developing goalie skills and playing goalie with this team.

Thanks for clarifying. I did not intend on banging on you or MVLA (a club against whom my kids have played (including, I think, against some of these 06s in Futsal down in SJ though a parent told me it was still a mixed group in that event)). I am also the parent of a FT goalkeeper who was not full time until about U13G - she's a better keeper now b/c of her field time and I think it is critical that kids don't specialize too much, especially in goal, before they are a bit older. At U10, one can't know the skill set at U13 or U14 or the height after puberty - there can be great benefit to getting time in goal but playing FT in goal can really delay development of other skills (even if there is a real commitment to playing out of the back), skills that may be critical if the player decides at 12 or 13 that she does not want to play goal or ends up not being tall enough to be effective at the older ages.

All good dk_b, agree with you completely. I'm sure Joe Cannon, who runs the goalie curriculum at MVLA, could elaborate more much on the goalkeeping philosophy at the club, but playing in the field is absolutely a key component for interested goalkeepers from what I've seen.

That was indeed a mixed group in SJ, half of each - a fun event.

    Good Joe-drop. He rocks.

I was hoping your girls were going to pull it out in the Futsal final. I enjoyed watching them play.

Thanks dk_b. I think they wore down after not putting away early chances, but kudos to the opposing team who were tough and relentless. I believe several of their players were from San Juan and/or Galaxy (?)
