    Pretty quiet around here...

    Results so far-
    - Ajax wins both (3-1 and 3-0)
    - Quakes beat Clovis but 4-1 (maybe closer than expected?)
    - Clovis beats Union Sac (1-0... close game)
    - San Juan beat West Coast (1-0... they were really evenly ranked so only an upset that West Coast (first pot) got unlucky to draw San Juan (4th pot) after San Juan dropped an early game)
    - also Diablo beat Mustang Elite (2nd team) on the 10th)

So big weekend deciding the top 8 and the next 16. Any predictions? What are the really tough games? Who is your top 8?

    I guess mine are:
    A- Quakes
B- Davis (tough one... Davis v Ajax is going to be interesting to watch)
    C- MVLA
    D- San Juan
E- Mustang (a really tough one... again Mustang v Pleasanton is a game to watch)
    F- Cal Odyssey
G- Placer (SRU is good but unlucky draw)
    H- Thorns

    Enjoy the games this weekend

    Okay how are things going...

A- Quakes secured the top spot
B- Davis beat Ajax today and should beat MVLA White tomorrow)
    C- MVLA looks on track
D- San Juan also looks on track
E- Mustang - Pleasanton tied today so all about goal diff tomorrow with Mustang +1 right now
F- Cal Odyssey looks very safe (only team in group with positive GD)
G- Placer - SRU tied so it will be goal diff tomorrow with Placer +2 currently
H- Thorns look in pretty good shape, need a tie or win tomorrow at Diablo

How did you calculate these match ups? looks to be a quality top 8 but how does the seeding work? State Cup newbee???

A-H are the existing round 2 brackets. The winner of each bracket is in the top 8. Out of what I have listed Pleasanton beat Mustang on goal differential, Placer beat SRU also on goal differential. So the top 8 (state group) is..

    A- Quakes
    B- Davis
    C- MVLA
    D- San Juan
    E- Pleasanton
    F- Cal Odyssey
    G- Placer
    H- Thorns

The third round match ups are based solely on bracket (so basically luck of the second round pot draw)...

    A-H
--------- winners play in top 4 semi-finals and losers in bottom 4 semi-finals
    D-E

    B-D
--------- winners play in top 4 semi-finals and losers in bottom 4 semi-finals
    C-F

Then the winners and losers play again so the semi-final winners of the top 4 semis play for the state championship, etc.

    So...
someone will win all 3 games - state champion
someone will lose all 3 games - 8th place

The places will work out as following (if anyone cares)
    WWW - 1st
    WWL - 2nd
    WLW - 3rd
    WLL - 4th
    LWW - 5th
    LWL - 6th
    LLW - 7th
    LLL - 8th

(note, you want to lose late to get a better position (if that matters to you)... the 5th place team could lose barely to the 1st place team in the first game but they still lose this first game thus are then in the bottom half of the bracket from then on)

3rd round in the state group can be a bit brutal to the teams... 3 teams will lose 2, one team will lose 3, 3 teams will lose 1 and only one team will win out of course and these are almost all teams who have not lost a game yet in state cup (maybe have one tie) and likely do not lose very often.

Thanks for the feedback was curious regarding this and your explanation was great!!! I thought points and goal differential would come into play with the final 8 seeding, but apparently not. It was predetermined. in the round 2 draw. Should be a good weekend of soccer in Dublin! Just saw ALL finals are in Modesto?

    Quarterfinals are in the book...

    Quakes beat Thorns handily 4-1
San Juan needed PKs to beat Rage 2-1 (PKs)

    on the other side
    Call Odyssey beat MVLA 3-1
Placer had a close one with Davis, wining 3-2

    Sunday we see....

    Quakes vs San Juan

    Placer vs Cal Odyssey

Winners will play for state championship

Caught a bit of the Cal Odyssey vs MVLA game. Cal Odyssey seems to be steadily moving its way into and up Top 10 in NorCal. Congrats.

And Santa Rose lost to AJAX in the 9-16 quarter-final round. Is SRU regressing or AJAX just got better?

Congrats to Cal Odyssey. Win or lose on Feb 25th, their ranking will bump up for sure though https://youthsoccerrankings.us/rankings/CAN/13/Girls/ doesn't seem to have incorporated results since State Cup Round 1 yet.

Who won the Thorns v Rage game? A bit odd it hasn't posted yet when everything else has.

I heard RAGE won 2-1 against Thorns, but the bigger story gotta be San Juan keeping SJEQ scoreless and then winning on PKs. Seems that the smaller fields allowed defenses to get tight and make scoring very difficult.

San Juan was George Gervin "Icy". To win 2 consecutive games in PKs is pretty incredible. And the PKs that I saw were unstoppable. Congratulations. This 05 age group is a really strong and fun to watch.

Didn't they play the 3rd round games on the turf fields at Mary Grogan? I wouldn't consider those fields small.

Field had nothing to do with the win. The fields were big and in great shape. San Juan did not pack the box if that's what you are implying? They played a great game and continued to play soccer the whole game while Earthquakes looked for their target player (I can't remember her name or number sorry, but you all know who she is) to win the game. They have good players and are a very good team, but rely on that one player too much and in the end that hurt them against San Juan in my opinion. It was a great game, but San Juan was better prepared and had a better game plan and played the way they have played all year.

All year? Not bad for a team that got an at large bid to advance past the first round.

YES all year if your asking. Win or lose this team plays quality soccer. Have lost a couple they should not have because that's soccer and it happens. Look at their record since last May when they started. I believe they have only lost 3 or 4 games all year and just beat 3 of the best teams in the 05 age group starting with West Coast, then Pleasanton and finally the Earthquakes. Toughest draw if you ask me. Don't forget they won Surf this summer too (Super White) beating the Eagles no less and they are currently 1st or 2nd in the ECNL league. That race won't be over until Mid May. So yes they have been very consistent all year and congrats to them!

I would suggest there is not much in it between earthquakes, San Juan and Placer. They are all fantastic teams... best in NorCal it would seem*

The EQ - San Juan games have had one goal scored in two games. Earthquakes winning 1-0 and then San Juan winning in PKs

San Juan - Placer have extremely close also with a San Juan winning 1-0 this past summer.

And finally EQ - Placer have had two goals in two games, EQ winning both but likely closer than any score shows.

To me San Juan has a brilliant team defense and no one should want to go to PKs as that is clearly an area of focus for the team. They also are very high energy and give little space to work. They should not be playing super white in surf in the future... super black fits the team much better. :)

EQ have a similar defense... neither placer nor San Juan has scored on them. They also can score from multiple players... I believe the thorns game had 4 different players. They seem to not focus on set plays much, which was definitely an undoing with San Juan... 9 corners and a PK in the game with no goals scored.

Placer has again a very good defense and possess the ball amazingly well maybe best of the three teams and I would not like to face their set plays too often as they seem very good from the parts of games I have seen.

All the teams are challenged to score when they play each other.

    * Note... I would like to see Pleasanton play EQ and Placer with Pleasanton’s current lineup.

Also all teams face challenges when playing each other while missing players. Placer had a tough weekend with their key GK out injured and at least one other player sick. EQ has been missing their key holding mid which definitely causes them issues if you watch games with and without her. Not sure on health of San Juan.

Just my two cents. Good luck to San Juan in the finals.. I personally cannot imagine them losing but one has to say cal odyssey is the underdog that so far has been a giant slayer

    * And.. they are all the top 3 05 teams in youth soccer rankings in NorCal.
    #6 EQ
    #14 Placer
    #16 SJ
