They have one forward who is dominating and making the recent difference in my opinion.
SoccerFan2 I agree that there forward is playing well but when watching the Thorns they had some solid players in all positions. I couldn't really point out a weak player on the field. My friend said that they played this team back in March and won 5-1 with this same team and 6 months later they lose 3-0. We both agreed there backline was tough to get behind. He pointed out that one of there midfielders now plays center back and gave Surfs forward a run for there money. Surfs forward is pretty damn solid and there Thorns Center Back kept her off the ball and would not allow her to get a shot off. We were pretty impressed and look forward to watching more matches in the future. I know there coach Matt Marquess pretty well because my daughter goes to his Mobility Trainings and he's a really good Trainer/Coach.
Good for the Thorns to be playing some good soccer!!
The funny thing @ Nocalsoccer is that I think 99% of your posts have been about Thorns or mentioned Thorns. Even back before Thorns existed your posts were about De Anza Force which is now Thorns. If I had to guess I would say that you are not with an ECNL team, but more self promoting Thorns, lol. I think it's actually pretty funny!!
Hey TicTacToe- My daughter was with Gryphons at one point but now she's playing in a ECNL club but on a team2. She'll never be a DA/Academy player because her first love is Volleyball. There several good teams here on the peninsula but I tend to follow my former club success. MLVA, Quakes and Thorn all have amazing players but in my opinion Thorns 05's have a leg up right now. I'm sure with more movement things will change. San Juan and Rage are close behind. ECNL produce good players and will continue to produce players. Not knocking ECNL one bit. Facts are Facts!!!!
If Thorns 05 GDA team is truly as good as you say, then you might want to let your buddies there know that the team is not showing up anywhere in the ranking list at https://youthsoccerrankings.us/rankings/CAN/14/Girls/
Hmmm, looks like NONE of the GDA teams is showing up in the rankings. And NONE has any updates on https://home.gotsoccer.com/rankings...Gender=Girls&Age=14&State=CAN&pos=9&hl=772139 either.
Do GDA teams/clubs want to keep any comparisons just amongst themselves? I don't see how this would be optimal to cultivate the "best of the best" for U.S. Soccer.
If you click on Placer, it lists their US Soccer GDA scores. https://youthsoccerrankings.us/team.html?teamId=2344305
For what it's worth, San Juan primarily grew their own crops, but I'd argue RAGE'S 2-3 best players didn't come up through an ECNL program. Their ascension to the top happened overnight.
A bit unusual for RAGE to recruit key players from other clubs, but I heard (albeit 2nd or 3rd hand) that the few additions to their 05 team desperately wanted to leave their club(s).
Good find! Looks like the other NorCal GDA teams are in there but just haven't had the 10 games required to get fully ranked:
Thorns 05 GDA: https://youthsoccerrankings.us/team.html?teamId=2344324
SJEQ 05 GDA: https://youthsoccerrankings.us/team.html?teamId=2344064
Lamorinda 05 GDA: https://youthsoccerrankings.us/team.html?teamId=2344107
But given the preliminary "Predictive Power" index of 37.42 for Thorns and 37.29 for SJEQ, they would be #1 and #2 in the NorCal G05 rankings. And Lamorinda would be #13.!
Norcal teams are getting stronger and stronger and will continue to compete with Socal teams. The start of the DA season is going pretty good for the Norcal o5 teams. While adding 4 top 05's to Quakes last year at this time there still showing how strong team of a team they are coming out with 2 ties against Surf and Galaxy SD. Thorns too adding some top players and tied Galaxy SD and beat Surf 3-0 and first weak beat Quakes in a very exciting game. So Norcal is turning some heads. Its a long season so enjoy the ride. Rage, MVLA and San Juan are also strong teams and competes with Socal team. Its exciting to see. If your trying to find DA teams on YRS -won't because DA teams are on the USDA website.
I believe Thorns 05 has added a couple of girls in the recent months, but had an extremely solid nucleus to build around. They are big and fast with technical skills and a very good coach. Both the Quakes and Thorns have given the southern CA teams a run the past few months.
I don't know that RAGE recruited them... hopefully I didn't imply that. I only know 1 of the players that moved, personally, and she was not recruited.
With the exception of maybe Mustang 05s, my observation is that all of the top teams have added players over time - whether Thorns, Rage, or whomever. Success is attractive. Just look at the Warriors.
I do think they brought back some players though
These teams are not really new. Given the movement in the past few days, I think youthsoccerrankings are working on combining them with their pre-DA results.
Thorns - https://youthsoccerrankings.us/team.html?teamId=2308655
SJEQ - https://youthsoccerrankings.us/team.html?teamId=2344064 - They seem to be mixing games from GDA and NPL team. I"m pretty sure the NPL and State Cup games are the NPL team.
Lamorinda - https://youthsoccerrankings.us/team.html?teamId=1992819
These rankings are a bit misleading and not very accurate, because it seems like Thorns might have made a new profile or registered as a new team and it does not even take in to consideration all their previous games like all the other teams. It only is counting their recent 6 games starting on September 1st. For instance it does not count their games at Surf Cup or other games before that which would lower their numerical ranking. At Surf Cup they won 1 game and lost 3 which would lower their ranking. A more accurate one would be their De Anza Force California Thorns Academy ranking which has all their previous games like all the other teams.
People need to remember that several GDA teams such as the Earthquakes and Placer have several of their top players playing up with the 04 teams and don't play at all with the 05 team because you can only play one game a day and they play on the same day. It defenitely hurts the 05 teams but playing up definitely helps with the development of those select girls. Also, with GDA allowed to sub now, all the girls get to start and play a lot more than last year.
Haha Several players from both clubs?
Top players or not its just interesting how teams in the 05 group are shaping out. You can say that in any age group with a player playing up.Not really about wins and loses its more how teams are developing. Quakes have 1 player playing up in 04's not sure about several. Placer has 2 but the 05 goalie who plays up with 04's came down to play with 05's recently. I'm sure there's other 05's that plays up in other clubs as well.
Rankings are always misleading. Surf Cup was not the start of GDA. Say what you want but Thorns are 5-0 and Beat San Diego Surf 3-0 and Quakes tied Surf so there both the top dogs right now and I'll give an edge to Thorns over Quakes right now. Rage in ECNL is looking strong as well as MVLA this past weekend. Good Norcal teams right now...
